50 years after the military coup in Chile | A look back from exile and resistance in Hannnover
Invitation | October 25, 2023 | 6:00 p.m. | Königlicher Pferdestall, Appelstraße 7. Hanover
On September 11, 1973, a military coup led by General Augusto Pinochet overthrew the democratically elected government of Salvador Allende in Chile. This event marked the beginning of a brutal dictatorship that lasted nearly two decades and had devastating effects on Chilean society. Thousands of Chileans were forced to flee their country and seek refuge abroad, including in Hanover, where an exile community united by hope and resistance formed.
Dear friends,
The Documentation Center Latin America of the Institute of Sociology invites you to a special event on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the military coup in Chile. This decisive moment in the history of the country and the Latin American continent, shaped the lives and fate of many Chileans and also left lasting traces in the Chilean community in Hannover. In the event, we will explore the history and lessons of this period and remember the exile, resistance and solidarity that manifested in Hannover and around the world.
The event is a conversation with Prof. Dr. Klaus Meschkat, Ivan Ballestero and Isabel Rojas Castañeda. The conversation will focus on the experiences of exile as well as thoughts and hopes for the future.
We look forward to your participation in this exchange, where we will honor the memory of those who suffered and struggled in the dark days of our history and reaffirm our commitment to justice and solidarity.
