The examination of colonialism and its effects up to the present day is attracting increasing interest in Germany. At the level of civil society, local initiatives are researching colonial connections in their surroundings. Museums, libraries and universities are increasingly looking into the history of their colonial involvement as well as the origin of their collections and possible restitution to the societies of origin.

As descendants of the perpetrators, we - German society as a whole - have a responsibility to come to terms with the colonial tyranny. Dealing with this and with the consequences that continue to have an impact today is not only important for strengthening historical judgment in this country. It also offers the opportunity for a new ethics of relationship between our societies, which are intertwined by colonial history.

A current petition calls on the German government to finally enshrine this topic in the coalition agreement and to take concrete measures for Germany's historical responsibility.
